What You’ll Need
Before getting started, gather these simple tools to make measuring your bracelet size quick and easy:
- A flexible measuring tape (ideally one used for sewing) or a piece of string
- A ruler (if you’re using string)
- A pen and paper to note your measurements
Step-by-Step: Measuring Your Wrist/Ankle/Neck
Using a Measuring Tape
1. Take a flexible measuring tape and wrap it around your wrist/ankle/neck just above the wrist bone/ankle bone or desired area around the neckline.
2. Ensure the tape is snug against your skin but not overly tight. It should feel comfortable, similar to how you’d like the bracelet to fit.
3. Look at the point where the measuring tape overlaps itself and note the measurement in inches or centimeters.
4. Add about a quarter inch to your measurement for a slight amount of wiggle room. The more wiggle room you add, the looser the bracelet will fit and the farther down your arm and hand it will fall.
5. This final measurement is your wrist size.
Using a String and Ruler
1. Take a piece of string and wrap it around your wrist/neck/ankle, following the same process as you would with a measuring tape, just above the wrist bone/ankle bone or desired area of neckline. Make sure it's snug but not too tight.
2. Mark the point where the string meets the starting point using a pen or marker.
3. Lay the string flat on a ruler and measure the distance from the starting point to the mark. Remember to add a quarter inch of wiggle room or more as needed.
4. This measurement is your wrist size.
Helpful Tips for Accurate Measurements
To obtain the most precise measurement possible, keep these tips in mind:
- Measure your wrist/ankle at its narrowest point, usually just above the wrist bone/ankle bone, to ensure a proper fit. You can also measure your wrist about 2-3 inches from the bend of your wrist and get a good measurement. From this point of your forearm, your bracelet has room to move, and you also have room for a watch.
- Avoid measuring your wrist/ankle when your hand is clenched or tense. Keep it relaxed for a more natural size.
- If you prefer a snug fit, add 0.25 to 0.5 inches to your wrist size. For a looser, more comfortable fit, add 0.75 to 1 inch.
Adjusting for Different Bracelet/Anklet Styles
Different bracelet styles may require slight adjustments to your wrist measurement. Here’s how to account for various types:
- **Chain or Link Bracelets:** These are typically adjustable, but it’s a good idea to add 0.5 to 1 inch to your wrist size for a relaxed fit.
- **Stretch Bracelets:** Due to their elastic nature, these usually don’t require additional sizing adjustments. Just use your wrist measurement.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Measuring your wrist/ankle may seem straightforward, but some common mistakes can lead to inaccurate results:
- **Measuring Too Tightly or Loosely: ** A snug but comfortable fit is key. Don’t pull the measuring tape or string too tightly and avoid leaving too much slack.
- **Forgetting Your Fit Preference: ** Decide in advance whether you want the bracelet to fit snugly, loosely, or somewhere in between. This preference will impact how much extra length you add to your measurement.
